Lang Lang cannot be bottled

Lang Lang has as many critics as fans it seems: he is too showy, his technique outstrips his musicianship, etc.

The thing I find most wonderful about him, and that all artists can celebrate, is the boundless fun he has and how comfortable he is expressing his feelings.  Perhaps this particularly appeals to me because I’m a bit tightly wound, and have difficulty trusting myself to really let go at the keyboard (without losing technical control).

In this short video Lang Lang is having fun with the third movement of Prokofiev’s third piano concerto.  Does he make the most of his abilities?  Perhaps not.  Do I wish I could let loose and have fun (while still playing difficult passages note perfect)?  Boy, do I!
